It was almost eight years ago that our beloved theme park, Astroworld, was torn down, right before out eyes. As the rides stopped, doors closed and park demolished, Houstonians were forced to say good bye to summer and weekend fun and search for other sources of entertainment. Although we would still have Splash Town and other trivial fairs, its never really been the same and up until recently many were pessimistic, if we would ever see another theme park of Astroworlds magnitude.

That was until now, after a $205 million deal gives the green light for construction, for the Grand Texas Theme Park. According to culturemap.com, investors, headed up by developer Monty Galland, officially closed on approximately 600 acres near the Flying J Travel Plaza in New Caney, TX, located in Montgomery County. Now construction is expected to begin on the theme park later this year for a projected completion in the spring of 2015.

Former Six Flags executive, who managed Astroworld, Chuck Hendrix says, “This is a huge, huge market. Never before have you had a major theme park depart a market and then be gone for six years with nothing to replace it.” Hendrix now serves as CEO of Innovation Leisure Partners, the group expected to manage Grand Texas Theme Park.

The theme park will include four dining restaurants, a 200 to 400 room hotel, plus two limited-service hotels, a reception hall, a chapel, the Big Rivers Water Park, live music and much more and while some may have to travel a bit of a distance, think of it this way, its a lot closer than Fiesta Texas, in San Antonio.
