Brothers, DJ 4500 and Kingly C Show Music Artists Love By Creating Mixtapes for FREE

Houston has a large number of talented, aspiring music artists, but a couple of individuals have decided to show love to every single ONE.

DJ 4500 and Kingly C are brothers and native Houstonians whose Grandmother just so happened to live across the street from the Screw Shop on Cullen. Kingly C met DJ Screw and a few members of the shop during one of his frequent visits as well.

It was about the year of 2000 or so when DJ 4500 decided to learn how to DJ, however, it wasn’t until 2015 when he started to drop mixtapes online after they started recording their podcast. Last year, DJ 4500 and Kingly C dropped mixtapes with over a HUNDRED artists on them and did not charge music artists ONE DIME.

Rocky: So you don’t charge artists at ALL?

DJ 4500: Nope. Not at ALL.

Rocky: What made you decide to not charge music artists to put them on your mixtapes?

DJ 4500: A lot of [artists] are working 9 to 5 [jobs]. I don’t charge because I know they are trying to get somewhere in their career. It’s gonna come back to you in the end anyway.

Rocky: How did you come up with this idea?

DJ 4500: I sat down with Kingly C and we decided for business that we would add artists to our mixtapes free. DJ Screw didn’t charge music artists to get on his mixtapes.

Rocky: So DJ Screw was an inspiration in coming up with the idea of doing the mixtapes for free?

Dj 4500: Yes. That’s the kind of person he was. The love he showed… we NEED someone like that. There’s so many times I’ve put artists on one mixtape who didn’t know each other. They check out each other’s music and many times wind up collaborating. I’ve had someone on one of my mixtapes from New York and have gotten love as far as New Zealand.

Rocky: Have there been many downfalls to not charging music artists to be on your mixtapes?

DJ 4500: There haven’t really been many… besides the fact I have to let people know. This is a FREE service meaning it’s not a quick turn-around. We take pride in each mixtape and it can take some time, but other than that, there haven’t been many downfalls.

Rocky: What are your long and short-term goals in the music industry in doing this free service for artists?

DJ 4500: Short-term, we want to make 250 mixtapes this year, that might be a little over 2000 artists. Eventually, we want to create our own total entertainment company. We want to offer affordable solutions for music artists on services like video production, studio production, merch.. etc.

Rocky: What is the process of submitting a track for one of your mixtapes?

DJ 4500: First, you would submit the track to BrickLayersEntertainment@gmail.com. We try to give everyone a chance. It’s gotta be an actual mixed and mastered track though. No links. Then, my brother and I put together a mixtape based on the type of tracks we have and group them together. It is then reviewed and goes on all distribution streams.

Rocky: That’s incredible. Is there any other piece of advice you can offer to music industry professionals?

DJ 4500: My Main thing is that you gotta LOVE what you do and treat people the way YOU want to be treated. It’s gonna come back to you in ways you never expected it to. It’s success stories every single day.

Rocky: Last question. I know you said you put a lot of artists on your mixtapes. It’s not that I am doubting that you did, but would you mind telling me some of the artists you have had on your mixtapes?
