If you just so happen to be one of the people who is able to or choses continue working right now, you must also understand that not everyone is in the same position you are currently in.

The Coronavirus pandemic has affected many individuals in many different ways.

Some people holding down part-time or full-time jobs at grocery stores have experienced an increase in the amount of time they are having to work.

Some who have to go to work outside of their home and still are currently employed are worried about catching and bringing home the virus to their kids or parents.

Some have been laid-off as a direct result of retail and office closures.

Some people and their family members are sick or have recently been sick.

Some are worried about where their next meal is coming from or how they are going to make their rent while waiting for a $1200 stimulus check.

During the time of quarantine, you as an artist or entrepreneur might decide to take this time to be productive.

I mean, why not?

There are definitely some benefits of having more time on your hands as an individual who works and has to build their empire in their spare time.

Maybe you have decided to take it upon yourself to utilize your spare time as an artist to roll out music or make music.

During this time, I am asking that your content and outreach meet people where they are at right now.

One of your fans could be sitting by their phone as their parent is dying from Coronavirus related pneumonia, but your message intended solely to promote your music, product, or artwork could come across as “spam-y”.

I am in no way asking that you guys make every post, e-mail, or outreach method a direct reference to the Coronavirus. I am asking that you check in with your fans and industry contacts right now to make sure that they are ok before you send them music or ask that they support your cause.

You could be damaging very solid relationships by not checking in with the people who love your music and support you before requesting that they do something for YOU.

This is a great chance for you to reach out to that A&R whose business card you got at SXSW two years ago without sounding insincere or awkward.

A simple, “Hey this is ______________. I know we haven’t talked in a long time, but I just wanted to check on you and your family. Are ya’ll ok?” text could really change your industry relationships when this is all over.

I am so happy to see so many industry professionals working now to innovate ways to still connect to their core audience and still push new music, but please keep PEOPLE in mind. The more you directly and positively affect their life, the more they will support YOU and every venture that you have and every move you make after things return back to “normal”.

So should you push your music right now?

If you thinking in terms of strictly numbers, then yes. The number of hours people are spending on their phones have increased. It would be productive for you to push music and videos now, but remember that People>Productivity.

Take care of YOUR people.
