I think we all know by now what June 27th means to Houston and the Screwed Up Click family. If you don’t know .. then shame on you. Your Houstonian credentials have officially been revoked. But in lieu of DJ Screw’s giving nature, I’ll catch you up to speed.

DJ Screw blessed the city of Houston with his innovative version of music, which included a slowed down (screwed) and heavily mixed (chopped) track and usually incorporated a S.U.C. member spitting a hot freestyle. DJ Screw, along with chopped and screwed music, were on their way to becoming the next big thing in Hip-Hop until his untimely death in November of 2000. But what Houston probably didn’t expect was DJ Screw releasing a track that would change history, June 27th. The track has been revisited time and time again since its original version with Big Moe, including a new school Houston remix featuring, D-Lo, Marcus Manchild, Le$, Propain and more and also a special remix by Drake, which landed him the massive love from Houston that he has today.

We can thank S.U.C. member, D Mo, for the date. The June 27th tape was created to celebrate D Mo’s 26th birthday, June 27th, 1996. Now Houston celebrates June 27th as an unofficial holiday. I plan on listening to screw all day. What about you? Now we just need the City of Houston to make it an official holiday. Can someone say paid holiday?

Below is the original version of June 27th. I’ve also included a new remix by Houston’s own, Mecca. She dropped her track this morning and its pretty hot. Check her out. Enjoy your day, Houston.
