Let me keep it honest, if we were in the early to mid 2000’s, DSD1’s emerging artist Yung Ruler’s new song “Old Me,”  would be running through Houston radio waves as we speak.

Not only does the song off his Broke N***a Turnt Rich project has a message behind it, but the way it’s constructed has radio ready song elements. You have a June James beat, YFN Lucci, who’s hot single “Keys To The Streets- also produced by June- constantly climbing up on the charts and Young Lace, another Houston artist who’ve been on the radio.

“We’re pushing the “Old Me” because that’s something everybody can relate to,” said Ruler. “I know people always say that they never want to go back to the old them, but sometimes going back to the old you is the best thing for you to do.”

This song is clearly structured for the radio, but unfortunately, we aren’t in the era of Houston radio appreciating the local talent, but still Yung Ruler is determined to make it. With a fresh southern swagger, struggle inflicted lyrics and a story to tell about rising out of the ghetto, Ruler is using this mixtape to give hope to the people who developed from situations like his own.

“To be honest with you, my influence is anybody that came from nothing to something,”said Ruler DSD1. “The people that went out there and got it is what fuel my engine. They keep it going. Seeing people who went from sleeping on the floor with no car, like I was last year is what inspire me”

Yung Ruler never thought he’d be making music, in fact, he didn’t think he’d be a free man. Back in 2010, Ruler said he was locked up fighting multiple accounts of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and attempted murder. He went away for a year. Though he was blessed enough to beat the aggravated assault charge, he was released on bond for his attempted murder charger. While on bond, he got straight to the music, something that was already in his blood line.

“I was always around music,” said Yung Ruler. “My whole family on my daddy side been making music since the band days. My dad was in a band and is own record label called Monster Records. Plus we had a studio at the crib. People used to always come and I’d used to watch them and listen.”

“I never thought I’d be making music,” he laughed. “My plan A was basketball.”

Fortunately for Yung Ruler, who originally grew up in Alief, had family in South Park. His South Park family would later become his music family. Locally known and well respected emcee Stunna Bam, who is also DSD1, is Rulers cousin and his uncle is King Ruler, a long time hood captain and the main man behind DSD1.

From the looks of it, DSD1 a blueprint as you may call it. They have been relevant in music since 2012. Although none of their artists has broke through and went major, they have a major producer in June James apart of the team and they are consistent in the Houston hip-hop scene. Stunna Bam has commonly been in radio rotation and now they’re pushing for Young Ruler.

“Of course I want to be on 979 The Box,” Ruler said. “But I want to be a megastar,” he added. “Right now, my song has been on the Dallas radio station thanks to my boy Hollywood Bay Bay.”

“Old Me” was dropped on Bay Bay’s K 104FM weekday show from 3-7pm.

Ruler and his team is doing the ground work for is Broke Nigga Turnt Rich project. It’s out right now and you can check it here. It’s a heavy 22-track project and anyone who is getting it out the mud should feel this.

Also Yung Ruler will be traveling to Austin to appear in a show with Lucci this coming Friday.
