1388519349937          For all hip hop all the time we always listened to 97.9. But many of us had absolutely no choice in where we could cure our hip hop jones. 97.9 for the most part of the past 10 years has been a juggernaut in Houston to get hip hop news and listen to the latest hits by our favorite artist. Over the years 97.9 has had a little competition, and the little competition they had could not sustain any ground and quickly fizzled out. Now new competition has presented itself and its been welcomed with open arms from Houston.

Its hard to believe that in the 4th largest city in the United States only has one station primarily devoted to hip hop. Just think about it there are countless stations for Pop, Latin Music, and Country but when it comes to hip hop its almost like listeners were forced to tune in to 97.9. This is not a knock against 97.9 but a consumers we should demand more from our city. This is just my perspective but I feel as though “The Box” had become complacent. I just remember back to a few short weeks ago when I was out doing last minute Christmas shopping and I heard the same songs over and over and over again. The mixes and songs in their play list are so limited that it would make an afternoon cruising the streets seem like an eternity. Plus they no longer played real music. I noticed they started playing club music in the car and car music in the club. As a true hip hop fan I gradually grew tired of it and began to download my own music, make my own play list and enjoy that. During this period of time the greatest thing I could have stumbled upon was an auxiliary cord. This gave me complete control over my music. If I was having a great day I’d play uplifting music, If I was headed to the club I’d turn up on the way there, and if I got that ever so elusive “Come Thru” text at 2 in the morning I’d have a play list for that situation as well.

Im glad 9.79 finally has some competition because now they have to work to keep listeners and be more aware of the content that played over their airwaves. Competition is what makes America great the fact that us as consumers or in this case listeners now can chose what we listen to versus having the choice already made for us. Even if this new station is only around for a brief period of time at least we can look forward to hearing a better product, whether it be from 97.9 or 93.7. Do I think this new radio station will overpower 97.9 and put them out of business….Absolutely Not. 97.9 has been a staple in the Houston community for years but 93.7 will have the chance to give them a run for their money.
